Professor Danesto B. Anacio

Danesto B. Anacio, Ph.D. is Associate Professor at the School of Environmental Science and Management (SESAM), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). His research interest focuses on the futures of socio-ecological systems and change, particularly on production and consumption patterns, indigenous peoples’ adaptation processes, and environmental behaviors.

Corollary to these specific human-environment interactions, he also looks at policy implications through futures-oriented perspectives and environmental histories and disaster studies like disaster management and resilience. Dane belongs to two indigenous ethno-linguistic groups of the Cordillera Administrative Region (in the Philippines) — the northern Kankana-ey of Sagada, Mt. Province, and the Ibaloi of Bokod, Benguet.

In Sagada, he is a member of the Tanggew, a community library and eco-cultural learning and resource center based in barangay Banga-an.

At the University of the Philippines Los Baños since 2022, Dane teaches various environmental science-related courses and is a member of different research projects, such as PAMANA, where he works on programs and strategies for the sustainable management of mining catchments and mineral-rich catchments in the Philippines.

Previously, he was a Lecturer and Researcher at the University of the Philippines Manila, between 2018 and 2022. He was a Research Faculty Member at the Institute of Health Policy and Development Studies (IHPDS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), University of the Philippines (UP) Manila in 2020. He was also in the Department of Behavioral Sciences (DBS), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of the University of the Philippines – Manila.

In 2021, Dane was working as a Project Manager at the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program, and in 2020 as a Project Development Officer at the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP).

He was a Mentor at The Climate Reality Project’s Global Training 2020. He trained as a Climate Reality Leader in Manila in 2016. Watch his Introduction Interview.

In 2018, he was a researcher working on climate and disaster risk assessment for local climate change adaptation plans, at the Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Environmental Management, University of the Philippines Los Baños.

Dane earned his Ph.D. in 2017 in Environmental Science at the School of Environmental Science and Management (SESAM), University of the Philippines Los Baños, with his thesis Environmental and Cultural Changes and Their Implications in the Practice of the in 1-Sagadas’ begnas ritual, Northern Philippines.

After his graduation, he was an Environmental scientist for the Social Impact Assessment of RTNMC and CBNC Social Development and Management Plan.

He earned his Master’s Degree of Science in Environmental and Conservation Biology in 2011 from Saint Louis University. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Biology in 2007 from the University of the Cordilleras.

Dane began his career as a Technical Support Assistant at the USAID Energy and Clean Air Project in 2007 until 2009. He continued as a Clean Air Monitoring Unit Member at the City Government of Baguio, where he managed the Smoke Belching Violators database and conducted field monitoring operations for vehicular smoke belchers. Between 2011 and 2012, he was a Researcher at the University of the Cordilleras.
